Destination Profile
Chengdu is famed for two main things. Firstly, it's the capital of Sichuan Province, which means mystical Taoist temples and Tibetan forests, revered Mount Qingcheng and the babbling water terraces of Jiuzhaigou all open up outside of town. Secondly, it's the home of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, where you'll meet and mingle with the white-and-black beasts in bamboo enclosures. Both of those sides of the city can be explored if you bag cheap flights to Chengdu from USA. There are lots of connections, with top bargains often coming on Chinese airlines like Hainan and China Eastern.

Traditional China comes alive in Jinli Street, a place where gabled roofs arc over street-food vendors and shadow puppet shows.
Kuanzhaixiangzi is a maze of courtyards and alleys where teahouses mingle with lantern-lit shrines – Chengdu at it's most evocative.
