Destination Profile
Leading Central America into the 21st century is the big, boisterous, businesslike sprawl of Panama City. It rises on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, clinging to the famous Panama Canal on one side, and edging into the primeval rainforests of the Chagres National Park on the other. Highlights of a visit include days out at the Miraflores locks, the characterful district of Casco Viejo (think cantinas and Spanish churches), and the ruined remains of Panama Viejo, where the buccaneer Henry Morgan once raided. Oh, and cheap flights to Panama City from USA are a ticket to Panama as a whole. That opens up the resplendent Pearl Islands, the far-flung adventure hub of Boquete, and the backpacker favorite of Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean.
Casco Viejo is Panama City's colonial center. It's a grid of cobbled alleys and Baroque churches framed by bougainvillea blooms.
The famous Miraflores locks are the place to go in Panama City to learn the history of the Panama Canal.
Panama Viejo was the original site of Panama City. Only the pirates came and razed it, so everyone fled in a hurry, leaving ruined buildings in their wake.
